It will be illegal to administer Botox or injectable dermal filler to anyone under 18 in the United Kingdom starting in October 2021, even if a parent or legal guardian has given permission. For some Irish people, a nationwide ban on this procedure would be an excellent first step toward ending a situation in which teenagers receive injectable treatments at home from people with no medical expertise.
Many jurisdictions in the United States do not have a minimum age requirement for Botox or filler injections, although some doctors have their own rules.
Regulators in Ireland have lax standards for Botox injections, leading to untrained and inexperienced practitioners doing procedures in beauty shops and private residences. Many teens have been subjected to injections that may not have been done safely or correctly. Injectors are seeking stricter rules, which they say will improve safety and level the playing field for the industry.
Recently, an Irish cosmetic injector claimed that the industry was out of control. She is one of many national industry leaders who believe that action must be taken before untrained injectors fail to follow established procedures and safety protocols, resulting in serious injuries or even deaths.
It is safe to use Botox on people under the age of 18 for medical reasons, she admits, and it can be beneficial for migraines or the jaw disorder TMD. Additionally, it can be injected into the hands or underarms to minimize excessive sweating and treat bladder issues.
In the face of laxity, those who prefer to maintain high standards and exclude minors from their care are fed up. The cosmetic injector claimed that because there is no regulating authority prepared to deal with the matter, harm continues to be done by untrained individuals.
There have been at least five reports of adverse reactions to Botox in the first two-thirds of 2021 in Ireland, which the Health Products Regulatory Authority regulates. Generally speaking, though, the side effects were mild to moderate and included things like blurred vision, rashes, and edema, listed as possible injectable side effects.
Training is Essential
Even if an injector chooses to work in a different country, proper training is essential to avoid unintended consequences and adverse outcomes. Injection depths, doses, angles, the needles to use, and the consent documents to manage are all part of good training.
The majority of states in the United States have regulations on who can administer injectables. Many require medical professionals to be trained and certified before treating patients.
